Morning Grind: Warner Bros. Wants Steven Spielberg for Moses Movie

The bible is like Hansel: so hot right now! Earlier this year it was revealed that Darren Aronofsky was planning a $130 million budgeted epic about Noah's Ark, and now Warner Bros. wants Steven Spielberg for its Moses film 'Gods and Kings.' Deadline reports that no formal discussions have taken place yet, but Spielberg did read the script by Michael Green and Stuart Hazeldine, which follows Moses from birth to death. (Getting the always-busy Spielberg signed on will be the difficult part.) Between this, Aronofsky's film and Mel Gibson's take on Judah Maccabee's life, B.C. is having quite a moment. [Deadline] Charming Dominic Cooper -- who stole scenes as young Howard Stark in 'Captain America' and wowed critics with his dual performance in 'The Devil's Double' -- is in talks to star in 'Motor City' for producer Joel Silver and director Albert Hughes. Cooper would play a felon seeking revenge on the men who framed him. [Variety] Here's your awesome rumor for the day: Twitch reports that 'Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' star Rooney Mara is the top choice to play the female lead in Spike Lee's Americanized version of the cult film 'Oldboy.' Josh Brolin is already set for the male lead. Take this with a grain of salt, but note: Twitch was the first site to report Brolin's potential involvement over the summer. [Twitch] Cherin Entertainment -- headed by Peter Cherin -- is close to acquiring an untitled pitch from screenwriters Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless and producer Gore Verbinski for what's being called a "futuristic 'Jungle Book.'" And you thought Hollywood was out of ides! [Deadline] MTV talked to 'Prometheus' writer Damon Lindelof back during Comic-Con, and in the just-released video (take your time on the editing, fellas), the former 'Lost' showrunner reveals that you should probably check expectations for the potential 'Alien' prequel at the ticket booth. "I think one of the really cool things about the first 'Alien,' if you watch it cold, Ripley is kind in the background like one of the crew members, and you're like, 'Skerrit's [who played Captain Dallas] the hero of the movie,' and he's one of the first to go. And then you're like, 'It's [the engineer played by] Harry Dean Stanton.' And, no, he's gone... and suddenly Sigourney Weaver, in the last 40 minutes of the movie, is the only one left alive. I think the idea of building a really cool ensemble and again presenting the audience with like, 'Who's going to be left standing at the end of this movie? Maybe all of them. Probably not,' [that's] part of the fun of what we set out to do." [MTV] Time for some year-end release date shuffling! 'Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol' will open in IMAX on Dec. 16, but not in wide release until Dec. 21... where it will face off against the just-moved 'The Adventures of Tintin,' which was set for Dec. 23. Meanwhile, presumed Oscar favorite 'War Horse' moved up to Dec. 25 from Dec. 28, where it will go against 'Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close.' [Deadline] In other release date news: Warner Bros. has staked out Oct. 19, 2012 for 'Gangster Squad,' the 'L.A. Confidential'-y cops-and-crooks drama featuring Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin and Emma Stone. Mark those calendars! [Deadline] Photo: Jon Kopaloff/FilmMagic

The Submission

Eddie Kaye Thomas, left, Jonathan Groff, Rutina Wesley and Will Rogers star in the Walter Bobbie-directed The Submission. An MCC presentation, by special arrangement with the Lucille Lortel Theater Foundation, of a play in one act by Jeff Talbott. Directed by Walter Bobbie.Danny - Jonathan Groff Trevor - Will Rogers Pete - Eddie Kaye Thomas Emilie - Rutina WesleyWhite boys can't jump -- or can they? Scribe Jeff Talbott reframes that question in a provocative way in "The Submission," when a white playwright uses the pseudonym of a black woman to submit his play (about "an alcoholic black mother and her card-sharp son trying to get out of the projects") to a prestigious theater festival. This subterfuge leads to some inflammatory confrontations on race and gender between the scribe and his alter-ego. But the characters are caught between sitcom and emo-drama, lacking the brains -- or, failing that, the basic vocabulary -- to make these calculated smackdowns more credible. What could be funnier? A white, middle-class playwright named Danny Larson (the professionally disarming Jonathan Groff) knows that no one's going to read a play about the black experience written by "a white, white dude." So he submits his play, "Call a Spade," to the Humana Festival under the made-up name of "Shaleeha G'ntamobi." This feminine (and "kind of black") name does the trick, and "Call a Spade" is accepted for production. Which puts Danny in the tricky position of finding someone to impersonate the bogus "Shaleeha" during the lengthy production process at the Festival's theater in Louisville, Ky. The job of "legitimizing the play" goes to Emilie Martin (in a bright and breezy perf from Rutina Wesley), a black actress who agrees to act as Danny's mouthpiece during rehearsals and reveal the play's true authorship on opening night. No surprise, Emilie falls in love with the play, gets caught up in the production, and loses herself in her role. So far, the situation is both funny and poignant, which is the way that Walter Bobbie ("Chicago") has directed the overall production. Like the understated humor of David Zinn's set -- a revolving series of self-consciously "original" Starbucks cafes that all look vaguely the same -- the industry satire is clever without being cutting or cruel. In the same vein, the supporting characters are played with more wit than bite by Will Rogers (effortlessly endearing as Danny's best friend, Trevor) and Eddie Kaye Thomas (a certifiable saint as Danny's loyal lover, Pete). If you met these people in a sitcom, you'd love them. The thing is, the play isn't really a comedy, and that poses problems when things get ugly between Danny and Emilie. To put it bluntly, Danny's a racist -- a real one. His casual conversation is full of racist comments that go far beyond any white guy's legitimate beef about reverse prejudice. Although Groff lays on the charm (and what a stroke of casting that was), Danny's insensitivity raises serious questions about his character. The main question, of course, is how such a narrow-minded and callous person could write an "authentic" play about black people. (Or even survive four years in New Haven while being schooled at Yale.) But you also have to wonder how a sweetie like Pete would put up with him, or how a nice guy like Trevor could stay friends with him. The answers can't be found in Danny's background, because Danny has no personal history. But then, neither has Emilie or, for that matter, anyone else in the play. They all exist strictly in the moment, in one universal, perpetually revolving Starbucks. Even sitcom characters are given more backstory than that.Sets, David Zinn; costumes, Anita Yavich; lighting, David Weiner; sound, Ryan Rumery; original music, Ryan Rumery and Christian Frederickson; projections, Darrel Maloney; production stage manager, Timothy R. Semon. Opened Sept. 27, 2011. Reviewed Sept. 23. Running time: ONE HOUR, 40 MIN. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Netflix's Qwikster Offshoot Unpopular on Wall Street and Main Street

A Netflix mea culpa from its CEO mailed to customers late Sunday that also served as an announcement that it would separate its streaming from its DVD business went over like a lead balloon.our editor recommendsHollywood Docket: Did Netflix Register the Qwikster Trademark?Humbled Netflix Separates DVD and Streaming Businesses, Abandons Price ChangesNetflix's Plans For New Headquarters Prompts LawsuitNetflix Shares Take Another Beating Friday Not only did the stock sink another 7 percent Monday -- continuing a slide that has more than halved the shares since Netflix announced a price hike in July -- but negative comments on a blog post from CEO Reed Hastings were piling up. In the post and his email to subscribers Hastings apologized for a lack of "respect and humility" when Netflix announced its 60 percent price increase, then he launched into a description of Qwikster, which will be the new name of the DVD service while the streaming service retains the Netflix brand. By dusk Monday, more than 17,000 people had weighed in at the blog post. "Is this an apology email? Or a Terms of Service email?" one commenter wrote. "Was it a coincidence that you decided to bifurcate your business and rebrand one half of it at the same time you felt it necessary to apologize for pissing off all of your customers?" Hastings said that Netflix and Qwikster will operate independently, including different websites and, for those who use both, separate entries on their credit card bills. Analysts were mostly unimpressed, and accused Netflix of acting in haste without doing its homework. They might have a point there: The @Qwikster Twitter address, for example, isn't maintained by Netflix but by a racially insensitive, prolific curser whose account is adorned with a photo of a joint-smoking Elmo from Sesame Street. He recently tweeted that people "wanna buy my handle," and he's been offered $1,000 so far. Netflix refused to comment about the @Qwikster controversy on Monday. So unusual was the decision to split the company in two, not to mention the way it was announced in a letter that hit inboxes just prior to midnight, that some were theorizing that the changes aren't exactly set in stone. Hastings already set the stage for further iterations with his letter, which said he needed to listen to customers more," said branding strategist Adam Hanft of Hanft Projects. "It's public experimentation. Things are happening so fast that there's no time for testing, so they'll announce it and see how consumers react." BTIG Research analyst Richard Greenfield wrote that, with its decision to separate DVD from streaming, Netflix's business went "from pretty simple to puzzling." "Will the nearly 10 million streaming-only subscribers be as 'sticky' now that they do not have DVDs lying around their house that say 'Netflix'?" Greenfield asked. "For me the Netflix envelope has always been a source of joy," Hastings wrote in his letter to subscribers. "The new envelope is still that lovely red, but now it will have a 'Qwikster' logo. I know that logo will grow on me over time, but still, it is hard. I imagine it will be similar for many of you." Netflix declined to share an image of the new logo with The Hollywood Reporter. Another change is that the Qwikster envelopes can also contain video games, which thrills some customers but worries some analysts. "It is a quick way to lose money," said Janney Capital Markets analyst Tony Wible, who has been telling clients to sell their Netflix stock. Inventory could pile up because consumers "have little interest in older games." While seemingly few and far between, there was at least one analyst defending Netflix on Monday, both for its decision to raise prices and to split its business in two. "As consumers use more and more devices for streaming, all the upsetting events over the past few months will be forgotten," said NPD entertainment analyst Russ Crupnick. Crupnick also predicted that other extreme changes for Netflix are on the way, owed to how expensive it is to license TV shows and movies for streaming. He predicts a premium tier for new releases or even a la carte options for certain movies. "For $8 a month, it's very difficult for Netflix to obtain the streaming content it wants," Crupnick said. "Consumers are going to have to pay sooner or later, so why not do it all at Netflix?" Related Topics Netflix Reed Hastings

'Real Housewives of New York': Inside the Inevitable Cast Shakeup

When a report surfaced Thursday that Alex McCord, Jill Zarin, Kelly Killoren Bensimon, and Cindy Barshop had been fired from The Real Housewives of NY City, the women seemed as surprised as their fans. Now, Barshop, who only joined the Bravo series last season, is breaking her silence on the reports.our editor recommends'Real Housewives' Song Sales: How They Stack UpBethenny Frankels Skinnygirl Cocktails Rep Denies Product Was Pulled from Whole Foods ShelvesBravo Exec Andy Cohen Scores Seven-Figure Advance for Memoir (Exclusive) "I'm sure that some women are negotiating," Barshop tells The Hollywood Reporter. "But I'm not negotiating right now. That's not to say I'm not going to be negotiating at some point." STORY: 'Real Housewives' Alex McCord and Jill Zarin: We Have Not Been Fired (Exclusive) Barshop's status is very similar to what Zarin and McCord told THR on Thursday: She's in limbo. The housewife says that she hasn't received an offer from Bravo to return for next season nor has she been fired. So, why would cast mate Sonja Morgan confirm to press Thursday evening that Cindy and the other three women had been let go? "She must have been promoted to Andy Cohen's position, so congratulations Sonja," Barshop jokes, referring to Cohen's position as the network's EVP of original programming. "She must have a higher position than the president, because that's not what the president said... Andy has not told me that I am fired." From what THR's sources close to the production tell us, Barshop is telling the truth. But, that doesn't mean that there won't be an inevitable cast shakeup. Our source tells us that Bravo has put out first round offers to Ramona Singer, LuAnn DeLesseps, and Morgan. Those three women are currently in negotiations on those offers. Depending on which women decide not to accept their offers or if an agreement can't be reached, Bravo will move on to extend an offer to one or more of the remaining four cast members. There are also three new women waiting in the wings ready to snap up any open spots. STORY: 'Real Housewives of NY's' Jill Zarin: 'No Decisions Have Been Made About Next Season' The odd exception to the rule is McCord, according to our source. Her fate doesn't rest on whether the other women come to an agreement with the network. Bravo is still weighing its option to pick her up and a decision should be made definitively by early-next week. But any way you slice it, next season will have a different configuration of women. When asked for a comment on the negotiations, a Bravo spokesperson tells us, "As of now, no decisions have been made yet." While she says she can't confirm whether or not the other housewives have received an offer from the network, Barshop says she definitely wants to return for another season. "It was a great experience to be part of the show," Barshop tells us. "It allowed me to get my brand, Completely Bare, out nationally. So, on the business side it was beneficial. On the personal side, I'm able to help charities more now. If I'm hosting a charity, it actually brings people in. I can make a bigger difference now than I was able to before." The other three women who are in contract limbo are also working on their business ventures outside of the show. McCord and husband Simon van Kempen are launching a home bedding business called Aluxe Home. Zarin is also working on her home collection and her shapewear line, Squeez. And Bensimon continues to write about fashion and design jewelry. Email: Jethro.Nededog@thr.com; Twitter:@TheRealJethro Related Topics Bravo The Real Housewives of NY City

Harrison Ford talks Indy 5

Harrison Ford has revealed the elements that make him want to continue revisiting the Indiana Jones character. And it isn't space travel. When asked at a recent LA Times event if he'd be up for doing more Indiana Jones movies, Jones said: "Maybe a fifth, but I ain't going to Mars.""Next time we get a script for Indiana Jones, I'd be delighted to play the character.""Each time we meet him, we wanted to advance the audience's understanding of the character, not just by putting him in adventures, but by learning something about him...""That's what led to the meeting of his father [in The Last Crusade], played by Sean Connery, and his son [in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull], played by Shia, and bringing Marion back."He then joked that Spielberg only hires him for Indiana Jones flicks, even though, as an actor, he has a bit of range.Spielberg's reply? "You know who I offered Jurassic Park to? This guy. Alan Grant, Jurassic Park, right here."As much as we love Sam Neill in that role, that's one post-release alteration we could definitely get on board with.
